World Cup increases in almost 80% visits to electronics shopping websites and surpassed Christmas

Travel agencies and sports goods websites also benefited, while department stores decreased compared to last year

São Paulo, 8 June 2010 – A study by Serasa Experian Hitwise, a solution that provides information about the interaction of people in Brazil on more than 150,000 websites in Brazil through the largest panel in the country, reveals that in May 2010, one month before the World Cup in South Africa, the market share of visits to appliance and electronics shopping websites grew by 77.78% compared to May 2009, reaching 0.32% of all visits in the Internet in the period. During the same month last year they obtained only 0.18%. Not even during Christmas their share was so large, registering 0.25% at the time.

The survey also points out that websites dedicated to sports also benefited with the world largest sports event and increased their share of visits by 25.70% in the analyzed period. In May 2009 the share was 1.79%, while in May 2010 it was 2.25%.

Still comparing websites in the month of May 2009 to May 2010, travel agencies grew their share of visits by 15.28%, from 0.72% to 0.84%. At the same time, sports and fitness goods rose 85.71%, from 0.07% to 0.13%. In a 12 months’ time frame, the pick of visits to sports and fitness goods websites was May 2010, while to travel agencies it was December and January, during Brazilian summer holidays, obtaining 0.16% of all visits market share in this period.

On the other hand, the share of visits to department stores websites presented a slight decrease of 2.78% in May 2010 weighed against May 2009, dropping from 0.65% to 0.63% respectively. Analyzing a full year report of the period, the months when visits to department stores websites had their largest market share was from November to December, during Christmas shopping period, reaching more than 0.84% of all visits in the Internet at that time.
